5 DOs and DON’Ts When Managing Business Social Media Accounts

Everyone wants a social media account to help promote their business. But how do you manage it successfully? Here are 5 DOs and DON’T that will help you manage your account like a pro! These tips will help you and your account thrive and become more successful in the long run.

DON’T: Be selfish

Do not, I repeat, do not, dedicate your entire your whole page to promoting your business and your products. Chances are, your followers already know what your business is and what you sell, that’s why they follow you. If you only post about yourself, your followers may get tired of you and unfollow.

DO: Make promotional posts the last thing to worry about

Follow the rule of thirds or the 80/20 rule. Essentially, these rules help you balance out your account, making promotional posts the smallest portion of your account. They help you focus on entertaining your audience rather than boring them with more posts about yourself. After all, social media was created for entertainment.

DON’T: Delete any comments, unless abusive.

Comments are a form of feedback. This is a safe space for your consumers to let you know how they feel about your business and your products. Comments also let your potential consumers feel out your business and get to know who you are before commiting.

DO: Engage with your followers

You are a business right? So, you want to show great customer service. Engaging with your followers, like commenting back, lets them know that you see them and that you appreciate their feedback. It also lets you squash any negative comments someone may have made professionally.

DON’T: Let your accounts die

Don’t neglect your accounts. You can’t just make a social account to say you made one. You have to treat it like an extension of your business. If your followers see that your account is inactive, they may think the same of your business.

DO: Create a posting schedule

A schedule will help you become and maintain consistency. With a schedule, you know exactly what to post and when to post it. A schedule will also encourage your followers to include you into their routines because they’ll know exactly when you are going to post. You could also include times to create content so that you never run out of content to post.

DON’T: Be needy

Don’t constantly ask for likes, follows, shares, etc. People are going to get annoyed and you are going to look desperate which is very unprofessional. People will follow you because they want to follow you, not because you told them to.

DO: Understand who your audience is

Knowing your audience will help you determine what to post. You are going to want to post what your audience likes so that you get the most engagement. This will also help you create a personality for your business and account which will in turn, attract more followers who are into the same things as your current followers.

DON’T: Assume that a business social account is just another account

There is more to it than just posting posts. More effort needs to go behind each post, for each post has a purpose. Each post is posted to help your business succeed. All posts must follow a structure to match your brand and create consistency. Knowing what you need to post in order to obtain that success is important.

DO: Create S.M.A.R.T goals

These goals will help you structure your account and provide objectives for you to complete. You’ll know exactly what you need to post to help you reach your goals and gauge if your account is where it needs to be. Specific S.M.A.R.T. goals will help you track your progress and measure your success.
